An American politician (played by Sam Waterston) visits his poet friend (played by John Hilde) in Saint Michael's Hill, France. While discussing their philosophy of life through medieval islands, they stumbled upon the reclusive scientist Sonia (played by Liv Ullman), who also joined their conversation. The two listened to the ideas of this talented woman and discussed how her ideas could play a role in their own lives as politicians and poets.
