In 1940, Varian Frye went to Marseille with $3000 and a list of endangered artists and writers, hoping to help escape within a few weeks. On the contrary, he stayed for over a year, striving to obtain false documents, raising emergency funds, and arranging travel through Spain and Portugal, where refugees would travel to safer ports. Many of his clients include Hannah Arendt, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall. Running against time to save them is a story about forbidden love, high-risk adventure and unimaginable courage.
